![]() I wanted to take a mintue to discuss an issue that is bothering me after the first nine days of rifle season....Road Hunters. Every year we take great pain to prepare our deer hunting property trying to consider all of the ins and outs. Stand placement both for success and safety, proper approaches, consideration for others hunting on our property and going the extra mile to make sure that our lease is prepared for the best season possible. However, every year many times on opening morning the feeling of fulfillment is taken from us and we are forced to feel uneasy while sitting in our stands...why, because a gunshot is heard from over the hill and you can hear the bullet as it cuts the air. I don't know how close the shot actually was to me, however I do know that it doesn't take any skill to drive around drinking beer taking pot shots at deer while sticking a rifle out of your truck window. I would just like to ask that all persons take care and be considerate of your fellow hunters, first many have spent all of their extra money securing and preparing their lease for their hunting, while they do not own the deer that roam wild inside the fences they do have a legitimate claim to the deer that are located within the boundaries. Second, it is darn unsafe! I would like you to try and imagine how you would feel if you knew that a bullet that you fired from your rifle injured or even took the life of another hunter, perhaps leaving his or her children without a parent. You never know what is located over that hill or ridge you cannot see over and it may just be a friend of yours or his child sitting in a blind not knowing that a careless moment to try and bag a deer could alter many lives irrevocably. Sorry to get on my soap box, but I would like to know some of your opinions on the matter. ![]() Web Posted: 11/13/2004 12:00 AM CST San Antonio Express-News State game wardens and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service officials will meet Monday at Camp Bullis to discuss circumstances surrounding a white-tailed deer buck that was killed at the military reservation last weekend. The buck's antlers are among the largest recorded in Texas. Apparently, the buck was killed with a pocket knife, which is not a legal way to kill a game animal in Texas. Col. James Stinebaugh, Law Enforcement Division director at the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, said the meeting will open a full joint investigation of the matter between state and federal game officials. According to state guidelines, the 35-point buck carries a restitution, or replacement, value of more than $49,100.
